SITIA HOLIDAYS The East of Crete has the beautiful city of Sitia at it’s heart, this sunshine city and it’s surroundings are steeped in history, from the early Minoans to the Venetians and the Turks, all succumbed to the lure of Sitia. Today's tourist would do well to heed their example, this is certainly a part of Crete which continues to offer much to the discerning holidaymaker. Sitia is a lively town, which has become a popular tourist area with everything for today's holidaymaker, with it’s range of beaches, it has sun sea and sand, plus several windsurfing areas. The town itself has a good selection of cafes, bars, and clubs, and a wide range of boutique shopping, all a short walk from the magnificent harbour area with it’s restaurants and tavernas providing views of the harbour and the sea beyond. The town is watched over by the Venetian fort which is sometimes the base for various festivals and events, the Kornaria theatre festival is an annual event, there is also the archeological museum, and of course the whole area is one big archeological adventure. Around this part of the island there is so much to see and do, there are the famous monasteries of Moni Faneromenis and Moni Toplou to visit, the Archeological sites at Itanos (a Doric Town), the fabulous Minoan Palace at Kato Zakros and several Venetian Houses. This corner of the Crete has a wealth of small villages some which have stood still, and offer a reminder of the past, these are still areas of agricultural dependence, this is the home of one of the worlds best olive oils, and Sitia wine is a major producer. On the western side of Sitia there are a host of small villages which offer the visitor a truly different view of life, some close to the sea such as Mochlos, Tourloti, and Hamezi, while others go up inland such as Skordilo and Ahladia. To the east of Sitia there are a wealth of small villages and larger ones too such as Palekastro on the way to the famous Palm Beach at Vai. All along the eastern end of the island there are a wealth of idyllic situations the area around places such as Zakros, Ziros, and the wonderfull Xerokambos. This end of the island is still an ideal place to enjoy either a relaxing or interesting holiday. Sitia is also home to the islands 3rd airport, which will soon be open to international flights as well as the present link to Athens, and the rest of Greece. Currently international air traffic is through Heraklion which is approximately 2.5hrs away, but new road improvements will reduce this time in the near future. The town has all the amenities one needs to enjoy the holiday of your choice, it also makes an ideal place for a longer stay even out of season there is much to see and do, and the mild climate in the area makes winter breaks a good option.
